The Mafia Island closure programme
Since 2009, the Mafia Island Octopus Closure Programme has been a global model for community-managed reef fisheries. Six-month seasonal closures across designated reefs, enforced by the village council, allow octopus to grow to T1–T2 grade before re-opening. Catches per harvester have more than doubled. Every kilo we ship is landed inside the programme.
Harvest method
Hand-caught at low tide on the reef flats by experienced women harvesters from 14 villages. No spear, no chemicals, no destructive gear. Each octopus weighed and graded at the landing station. Cash paid on the spot, same day.
Grades
- T1, over 4kg whole. Sashimi-grade, premium tier.
- T2, 3–4kg whole. Top tier for restaurant chains.
- T3, 2–3kg whole. Strong retail grade.
- T4, 1–2kg whole. Catering and retail packs.
- T5, 500g–1kg whole. Salad, ceviche, tapas tier.
Processing & packaging
Whole-cleaned (eviscerated, beak-out) or whole un-cleaned, depending on order. IQF inside 18 hours of landing at our Pemba facility (−35°C). Master cartons 10kg. Inner bags 1kg or 2kg as specified. CITES-friendly, octopus is not regulated, but full provenance documents in every shipment.
Octopus questions, answered
Year-round, but reef-by-reef. Closures rotate so we always have ground in harvest somewhere on the island. Peak grading season Feb–May and Sept–Nov.
Catch to landing <3 hours, ambient on dhow. Slurry-ice immediately on landing. Blast-frozen at Mafia station within 18 hours. IQF at Pemba within 24 hours of catch. Reefer container loaded in Dar within 4 days. Hamburg arrival 21–23 days from catch.
