From a Pemba dhow to 38 ports.
Salim Kombo grew up on Pemba, the fourth generation in a family of dhow fishers. He understood the catch. He didn’t understand why so much of it spoiled before reaching Dar, let alone Hamburg or Tokyo.
Dr. Asha Mwinyi is a marine biologist trained at the University of Dar es Salaam and the Plymouth Marine Lab. She understood the chemistry of spoilage and the science of MSC certification. She didn’t understand why no Tanzanian operation had been able to put it together.
They met in 2008 at a Mafia Island closure-programme meeting. They started Example Seafood Co. the following year, one cold truck, one rented landing station, three master fishers. By 2026, 2,400 tonnes annual export, six processing lines, and 38 destination ports.
What we’ve built, and refused to build.
Provenance per kilo
Every shipment carries a vessel ID or harvester ID, a landing date, a closure-programme number where applicable, and an MSC chain-of-custody.
No commodity grades
We don’t blend lots. We don’t hide low-grade behind high-grade master cartons. What’s on the label is what’s in the bag.
Pay at landing
Cash on the spot. No credit, no “we’ll pay next week”. The fisher walks home with the money. Receipts on file for every transaction.
No trawl. No longline. No FAD.
If we can’t source it sustainably, we don’t source it. We’ve walked away from contracts that would have required either.
